Producers to Watch: AFM Works! Sean Anthony McConville

As I was getting my badge at AFM, I met a British filmmaker who lives in Toronto and his success two years ago at AFM has brought him back again. Sean Anthony McConville of Mach2Films came to AFM two years ago with a project Deadline and with his producing partner Roger Betterton made a deal with Kru From Malaysia based on getting certain cast. His producer succeeded in casting Brittany Murphy and Thora Birch in Sean’s $2 million debut film and they received an advance from their sales agents epic pictures when the film was completed. Epic to date has sold the film to 35 countries. The U.S. release was by First Look. Its first release w...

    SXSW Party in L.A.

Perhaps it was because it was the first night of AFM, or perhaps it was a prequel to the first night of AFI Fest, but whatever the occasion, it was a great party Wednesday night at The Cat and Fiddle on Sunset Boulevard given by SXSW Film Conference and Festival. Janet Pierson was the regal hostess and everyone seemed to have a film in post. From Janet Grillo with Fly Away, Seth Nagel, Stephen Israel with three films in post no less: I Am Ben, Audrey and The Secret Lives of Dorks, Matt Wahl to Sam Kitt whose Cherry is screening at AFM and being sold by Unified. Many others were there including Chris and Lilyan Sievernich, Dana Harris and h...

Donna Gigliotti Joins The Weinstein Co.

The Weinstein Company and Donna Gigliotti have reunited. It's good news for both sides of the equation. Donna's beginnings as Martin Scorsese's assistant were followed by many successes. Her list of credits is huge, ending most recently with Let Me In.We worked together on the joint acquisition of My Beautiful Laundrette in 1985. At that time I was buying for Karl Lorimar Home Video and she was buying for Orion Classics with Michael Barker and Tom Bernard. This was a first for many of us. In these early days, Film Four had, what was perhaps not even yet labeled, a Producers Rep, Joy Pereths, a New York based British film expert who in 1...

    Brands in the Fire

A Blog on BrandsBrands as we knew them as children were burnt on cattle. The word brand began simply as a way to tell one person's cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. A legally protected brand name is called a trademark. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity - it ...

Producers to Watch: Brett Leonard and New Technology

By guest blogger Peter BelsitoBrett LeonardI recently met Brett Leonard and immediately liked him and his philosophy of work in life and the biz – a questioning and somewhat radical, experimental outlook which I just think is so relevant these days. As an accomplished filmmaker, his passion for helping young filmmakers find their voice is an inspiration and I also like his far reaching vision into ‘new technology’. Too often today our colleagues in the movie business fear and resist the trends we must learn to follow in our technological medium (i.e. cinema). Technology has no morality, nor feelings, it is impassive and ever changing, deve...

    Producers to Watch: Jonathan Dana

By guest blogger Peter Belsito:Jonathan Dana is an independent producer and former distribution executive currently at CODE Entertainment. He is known for the quality and number of his productions and his longevity in the L.A. and international film business at the highest levels. Also a good guy and friend. More than just a friend, he introduced us to the founders of Withoutabox, David Straus and Joe Neulight, in 2000. Jonathan was one of the original investors in WAB and supervised the launch of WAB with Joe and David. Six years later reminded us to give them a call. That call resulted in our joining forces which resulted in IMDb, an Am...

Producers to Watch: Rodrigo Bellott, More than a Producer

Rodrigo Bellott first came to our attention in 2003 when producer Ara Katz, retained our services to create the best strategy for finding international and domestic distribution for Rodrigo's debut feature Sexual Dependency, a La Ronde type film which begain in a small town in his native Bolivia to New York City. Since then, Rigo has produced and or directed 4 features. When Steven Soderbergh was casting Che, he came to Rodrigo for help and afterward encouraged him to create a casting company which has served the industry very well as the first such company in Bolivia if not in all of Latin America. However, that has not kept him from crea...
