"Fun" Fact About Queer Canadian History #1

Given Friday is Canada Day and that it's Pride Week in Toronto, it seemed only appropriate to launch this little series of fun (or, actually, mostly horrifying) facts. Though I must admit reasoning behind it reeks of self-promotion. Over the past two years or so, I've been working on an introductory academic text book - a sort of "Queer Canada For Dummies" - that documents the history of Canada's queer rights movement. It comes out in the fall, but I figured why not throw a few teensy excerpts up on this blog in anticipation (for all 3 of you Lost Boy readers interested in this topic!). Fun fact #1? The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the...

Toronto Embarrasses Itself (Again) With Intensely Lame Pride Promo

How did the folks at Toronto Pride ever think that this was not going to ridiculed as a stereotype-ridden poor excuse for a promo ad? Even if it was intended to be campy fun (and god I hope it was), the jokes are poorly written and stale, and the production value doesn't exactly scream "one of the l...

Watch "Track Two" and Learn About a Pivotal Moment in Canadian Queer History

This past weekend marked a very significant anniversary in the history of gay rights in Canada. Thirty years ago, the Toronto bathhouse raids - probably as important to Canada's movement as Stonewall was in the US - went down, which saw the city face a massive, violent raid on four bathhouses that resulted in the arrest of 304 men. It remains one of the largest mass arrests in Canadian history, and came after a series of smaller but no less terrifying campaigns by Toronto police. Toronto gay activist George Hislop was quoted in Canadian gay lib magazine The Body Politic as calling the night “the gay equivalent of Crystal Night in Nazi Germany...

Amber Heard Comes Out Of The Closet

I'm biting my tongue from "when you're super hot and still a bit under the radar, I'm not too sure how difficult publicly coming out really could be" kind of comments with regard to actress Amber Heard announcing she's a lesbian this weekend, because the main thing to take from the news is that it's definitely awesome Heard did this, and the more is always the merrier when it comes to open queers in Hollywood. Heard had said she had to ask herself if by being closeted, she was part of the problem in denying "millions of hard-working, tax paying Americans" their rights. Couldn't agree more. So way to go, Amber... and watch out Portia diRossi: ...
