From Stitch to Screen: Contemporary Canadian Costume Design (TIFF 11)

I just moderated a panel on something I knew absolutely nothing about until two weeks ago when I began to delve into the job of a costume designer in film. A film is hard enough to make, so how could the job of costume designer seem even more difficult? The imagination involved, the convincing of the producer and director that the designer's vision enriches their own vision for the film, the convincing the actor to step into into the character by wearing the costume, the management of cutters, sewers, the buying of clothes, of fabrics, ordering fabrics from China, making 30 copies of each costume, keeping the blood stains on each in sync wi...

So many really good docs and all will be eligible for the Academy Award Oscar for Best Doc and Best Doc Short. A Marine Corps cover-up of one of the worst water contamination incidents in US history, the glaring reality of the media's objectification of women, as well as portraits of assassinated journalist Anna Politkovskaya and the man behind Elmo are all ...

    The Hedgehog: Quintessentially French Comedy

I love French comedies that play with the humanity of the characters, so flawed and yet so affectionately rendered. The French seem especially to love depicting the interchange between classes which they do with flair, with a certain Gallic twinkle in the eye on the part of the story teller. The Rules of the Game (Les Regles de Jeux) is the classic example of class depiction told with this certain je ne sais quoi. I think even Bunuel’s depiction of the bourgeoisie in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie satirizing the French Bourgeoisie displays that quintessentially French touch (and Bunuel's not even French!) as it not only satirizes th...
