Well folks, the first batch of nominees this awards season have been revealed, with the Gotham Independent Film Award nominations landing this morning, giving an early peek at what will likely be some strong contenders down the line. Bear in mind, the Gotham Awards have little bearing on the eventual Oscar nods with only last year's Best Feature winner "Winter's Bone" factoring into the proceedings at the Kodak Theater. However, it does represent a good chunk of what you might see at the Independent Spirit Awards later in the year and if anything, these nominations confirm that Fox Searchlight is going to have another banner year on the statu...
Read More »For anyone who has been to Hawaii, you know that the laid back attitude of the locals, while at first disarming, quickly becomes infectious. Falling into the rhythms of the island is pretty easy, but for Matt King, our hero of Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," that Hawaiian charm doesn't come eas...

Not only did George Clooney make a surprise visit to the press conference of Alexander Payne’s new...
Read More »Marked by a strong, soulful performance by George Clooney, simple and economic direction, and a slow and patient gait, “The Descendants” finds filmmaker Alexander Payne working in the familiar, but not derivative, milieu of the adult drama. The film doesn’t reinvent the wheel, and while firmly within Payne’s wheelhouse, we can see the filmmaker inching towards pure drama without dramedy or resorting to the James L. Brooks method of punctuating pain with disarming laughter. That’s not to say “The Descendants” isn’t a dramedy or isn’t funny, as it certainly has its moments of comedic flair that do defuse some painful moments, but overall, one c...
Read More »After two bonkers weeks, the September festival season is just about dragging to a close (at least in terms of major awards-season debuts; Fantastic Fest is pretty much imminent, but it's not an awards player and the NYFF follows hot on its heels, but most of those films have screened already). And ...

Read More »Paul Rudd & Jennifer Aniston's 'Wanderlust' Moves To Feb 2012; 'The Descendants' Moves Forward One WeekIt has been three long years since Will Smith, arguably one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, was last seen on the big screen. 2008 saw two sides of the thesp: the blockbuster star in "Hancock" and the awards season contender in "Seven Pounds." Though they were successful, neither film quite lived up to expectations - and now Smith seems determined to bring home the bacon. Next year he'll be back with his mega-franchise in tow for "Men In Black III," and he won't be keeping fans waiting as 2013 will once again see him at a theater ne...

Read More »Shifting from heartbreak to cathartic laughter and back, sometimes within the same shot, director Alexander Payne and star George Clooney have collaborated on "The Descendants" to give us a very human story about a very flawed man and his very flawed family. Just like his previous pictures, the success of Payne's film rests on whether he can coax a nuanced performance from a strong male lead who is capable of accessing intense vulnerability. In “About Schmidt” (2002) he found what he needed in Jack Nicholson’s Oscar-nominated turn and two years later in “Sideways” (for which he shared the Oscar for Best Screenplay with Jim Taylor) he scored a...
