Screw Serious Cinema, It's Time for Some Laffs 'n Action Ah January, what a curious moviegoing month you are. You're the dumping ground for the studio dreck (long live Nic Cage's Festival of Wigs) because it's a time of AWARDS fever, with noms and screeners and Hollywood Foreign Press luncheons (and YOU get a Blu-Ray player, and YOU get a Blu-ray player!) up the wazoo. Hence the highly mixed bag of new releases we get every week. Some of these may benefit from the relative lack of competition, but it's pretty much a giant risk! The wide releases gambling this weekend are two comedies for those fans who are just SO tired of serious movies abou...

Review: 'Green Hornet' Lacks Sting, Anything Else Even Remotely Interesting

Loud, clamoring, haphazardly thrown together and risibly scripted from what feels like a poor first draft, Michel Gondry's unfunny, unengaging "The Green Hornet" lands in a January release date because it's exactly warranted: it's a throwaway action picture meant to fill the early new year void, but...

The Escapist & Potentially Entertaining Films Of 2011

Tentpoles That Hopefully Are Fun, Indies That May Or May Not Be Quality, Etc.You could see our annual three sets of anticipated film features like this: the Most Anticipated is an earnest example of the films we're truly looking forward to the most in that year, with a few caveats listed within if you read closely (i.e., we're looking forward to it, but the writing might be on the wall). Then our Escapist, Popcorn piece is more like: these are the fun, entertaining films of the year that may or may not be good. For us and our taste, it's always a bit of a toss up and history shows that we're generally on the money in terms of how we'll feel a...

Watch: New Trailer For 'The Green Hornet' Gets It Right

We -- along with pretty much everyone else -- have been Debbie Downers on Michel Gondry's forthcoming "The Green Hornet," and with good reason. The early footage and trailers failed to impress and the late stage announcement of 3D didn't exactly help matters, but hot on the heels of some positive te...
