Weekend Box Office: 'Super 8' Is A Super Performer For Paramount, 'Judy Moody' Has A Bummer Summer

Call this one a victory for Paramount, and a big one at that. “Super 8,” which opened to $37 million, was advertised with only the slightest of peekaboos, an ad campaign that played less coy and more stubbornly mysterious. While the film was pitched on the name of Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker has...

'The Tree Of Life' Hits U.K. Cinemas On July 8th

As "The Tree of Life" continues to roll out across North America and the rest of the world, Terrence Malick fans in the U.K. have been frustrated by the lack of any news regarding a release. Earlier in the year, a bit of a brouhaha erupted when original distributors Icon tried to schedule a release ...

Weekend Box Office: $56 Million 'First Class' Opening Isn't X-actly What Fox Had In Mind

As the only major opening of the week, it was not a surprise to see “X-Men: First Class” reign with a $56 million total. For those keeping track at home (why are you doing this?), this is the lowest-scoring opening weekend for any of the four films in the “X-Men” series save for the eleven-year old ...

Terrence Malick Wrote A Letter Of Instruction To Every Projectionist Showing 'The Tree of Life'

Plus Experimental Filmmaker Whose Work Malick Samples TalksSo, after years and years of waiting, Terrence Malick's long-delayed "The Tree of Life" is finally in theaters. Like, right now. In fact, today sees it expand beyond New York and L.A. to Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Austin and Dallas, among others, so more and more of you will get the chance to check out a film that, while not the second coming of cinema that some were hoping for, is undoubtedly a must-see. And with that expansion underway, it seems that the typically meticulous Malick has been getting personally involved to make sure that you see it in the w...

Weekend Box Office: Despite All Warnings, Everybody Sees 'The Hangover Part II'

In the future, sequels to all our popular films will not require writers, directors, or even new talent. Sure, they might re-hire some of the people responsible for the first film, but by and large, the leading users of Xerox technology will be Hollywood executives. At least, that’s if the mammoth opening for “The Hangover Part II” is any indication, as the film took advantage of the holiday weekend to score an expected $137 million over this five day period. Critics seemed to do everything short of design spreadsheets to illustrate just how Todd Phillips and company were replicating the exact story of the first film (arguably, the marketing ...

12 Things You Need To Know About The Making Of Terrence Malick's 'The Tree Of Life'

Terrence Malick's long-awaited “The Tree of Life,” opening today in select cities, is the kind of movie that is designed to be talked about, chewed on, and poured over. It’s a movie that demands you grasp at the unknowable, is challenging and gorgeous in some very deep and profound levels and asks big questions about who we are and where we came from, not just on a human level but on a grander, “how does life exist” scale. (On the same token, its complete lack of an identifiable narrative/dramatic structure and emotional aloofness might drive you batty.) Looking into “The Tree of Life” (and beyond), though, you’ll find even more tantalizing q...

Watch: 4 Clips From Terrence Malick's 'The Tree Of Life'

It's hard to believe it was just over a week ago that we finally saw Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" when it made its long awaited premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. While we did have some issues with the film, which we elaborated on in our review, of any film we saw at Cannes, it's still on...

Palme d'Or Winner 'The Tree Of Life' Goes Wide July 8th; Full Rollout Release Dates Revealed

We have to admit, when it was announced yesterday that Terrence Malick's "The Tree Of Life" walked away from Cannes with the Palme d'Or we were a bit surprised. The long-awaited film got a mixed reception on the Croisette and we expected a unanimous crowdpleaser like "The Artist" or "Le Havre" to walk away with the honor instead. But undoubtedly, nothing else at Cannes this year matched the ambition or scale of "The Tree Of Life" so on that basis alone the award fits. In any case, Fox Searchlight are definitely pleased as punch to be on able to add Cannes to their marketing campaign and it puts a fresh eye on the film in advance of the platfo...
