Idris Elba Claims Black Men are Never Called Sexy

This is interesting. I can't say I agree; I actually thought the opposite. The media is more prone to label black men as "sexy" than, let's say, "handsome." In a recent interview with The Life Files, Idris Elba expressed his views on the topic:

What's Will Smith Training For In This Video Clip?

I really don't know how TMZ gets close enough to Will Smith to grab this footage (dated 8/12) which they say is of him testing out the gym's facilities, including a 20-minute MMA training session with Jamall "X Factor" Johnson; apparently, he's on the market for a new gym in Philly. Funny, I figured...

Maybe Paula Patton Won't Be Playing "Sister" In Sparkle Remake After All (Casting Call)

Remember her revelation at an ABFF talk last month, when she acknowledged that she'd been offered a role in the Sparkle remake that's in the works, with Salim and Mara Brock Akil (the team behind Jumping the Broom) shepherding the project.

James Baldwin: "Who Is The "N*gg*r?"

I don't believe there's been a feature narrative film on the life of James Baldwin has there? There've been documentaries like The Price Of A Ticket, but no biopics I'm aware of, or if one has even been attempted. Or have there been any feature films in which he is a character in someone else's stor...

George Lucas' "Red Tails" - Tepid Feel Good Story Or Unvarnished Gaze?

I cast a baleful eye at this film because I don't know if director, Anthony Hemingway, screenwriter, John Ridley or distributor Lucasfilm will have the guts to give us an unvarnished look into racism maintained in that time period against African-Americans in an unmixed company scene with white offi...

Debra Lee Promises New Look BET; Wants To Attract Larger Black Audience w/o Offending

When I became CEO I had to define my vision for the company. How do we make our brand distinct and compete with other networks? I realized it was time to focus on original programming... Our new brand strategy: We respect, reflect and elevate our audience. They want to be entertained, but they also want to be inspired. For awhile we went too hard-edge. We had a lot of criticism when we were primarily airing music videos, which a lot of people felt were derogatory towards women. We heard that loud and clear... Our programming filter now is: It has to have a message, can’t be derogatory and has to show positive images. That doesn’t mean that it...

Trailer For Kenyan *Superhero* Feature Narrative "Leo"

This reminds me of 2 Focus Features' Africa First Shorts film I saw at the New York African Film Festival earlier this year. The first, Umkhungo, a South African film, which I described as close to a superhero origin story, set in an African country, as I've seen, which centers on an orphaned child with uncontrollable supernatural powers, and those who'd rather see him expelled; the second, Mwansa The Great, made by Zambian Rungano Nyoni, that centers on an 8-year old, who, in an attempt to prove he is a hero just like his father who passed away, goes on a quest to find the "magical" substance necessary to fix his sister's broken doll, and ...
