Knight and Day: Early Reviews Are Mixed

I find myself rooting for James Mangold's Knight and Day, which functions better as a breezy summer popcorn rom-com than an action-packed chase movie, as Justin Chang of Variety points out:

MTV Movie Awards: Bullock Should Have Kissed Betty White, Eclipse Clip, Cruise and JLo Dance

As I've said, most awards shows are about people promoting themselves. Wouldn't it be a great idea to get the three stars to intro the Twilight: Eclipse video? (It's below, along with clips from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Last Airbender, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.) Let's hav...

Cruise Reprises Tropic Thunder Grossman Role

Tom Cruise dons producer Les Grossman's hirsute fat suit once again for the MTV Movie Awards, which air on June 6. One video shows a hairy post-Scientology Cruise assaulting an older Cruise reenacting the young Risky Business Cruise. An unintentional meta-enactment of his entire career? He also da...

Knight and Day: Cruise, Diaz Clip

The TV spots for high-octane action comedy Knight and Day inspired me to tweet: "Knight and day with cruise and diaz looks cheesy. Even with top dollar vfx."

Industry Gives Hollywood Film Festival Free Pass

I am surprised by the film industry and the media's continued willingness to give a free pass to entrepreneur Carlos de Abreu's Hollywood Film Festival, a cannily constructed facade which honors stars, filmmakers and craftspeople and lines the pockets of de Abreu.

    Cruise's Star Status in Flux

Clearly, Tom Cruise is not the mega-star he was when MGM chairman and CEO Harry Sloan gave him and then-partner Paula Wagner a piece of United Artists. Now he has the flop Lions for Lambs behind him and Bryan Singer's tarnished Valkyrie looming ahead--the film that looks like more of an expensive ar...

Wagner Bolting UA; Valkyrie Will Open in December

When Bryan Singer first approached United Artists with the idea of making Valkyrie, he wanted to do it for about $25 million. Then Tom Cruise got interested and the budget exploded. The same thing happened to Lions for Lambs -- to Cruise and Robert Redford, it seemed like a modest little movie; at $35 million plus marketing, it was still too expensive for what it was. The idea of UA being an indie was impossible with the players involved. Now Valkyrie, which several people I know have seen and liked, has bad buzz and will be judged as a costly star vehicle, which is quite different from a $25 million movie with no marquee star. Finally, MGM h...
