    22 Classic Westerns We Love

There are two genres that every filmmaker wants to tackle: the musical and the western. Having flirted with the latter a number of times, the Coen Brothers, undoubtedly one of the foremost filmmaking teams of their generation, have finally delivered their first full-flung oater with "True G...

Academy Disqualifies Scores For 'Black Swan,' 'True Grit' and Others From Oscar Consideration

The trouble with the Academy awards, and indeed in putting too much stock in them, is that you're relying on the decisions being made by a relatively small, aging group of people. In many ways, things are improving -- Academy membership is getting younger, and it's starting to show: we can't imagine...

Review: 'True Grit' An Old-Fashioned Oater Only The Coens Could Make

Judging by some of the early reviews of "True Grit" you would think that the Coens had left their bag of tricks at home when making the film, delivering a respectful if overly formal western. However, it seems those reviewers who got an early look forgot that the Coens are often found at the height of their creative powers when operating with a genre milieu. Take "Miller's Crossing," "The Hudsucker Proxy" or "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" -- all films with giant nods to filmmakers of yore, yet each imbued with the Coens' own distinctive thematic obsessions: this all continues with "True Grit." 'True Grit' Score By Carter Burwell Hits Stores December 21st, Album Streaming Now

Is this the year -- ok, at the least the month -- of the arthouse film? It would certainly seem that way. Big glossy studio pictures like "The Tourist" (opening this weekend), the forthcoming "Tron: Legacy" and "How Do You Know" are arriving with tepid buzz while auteur driven work such as "Black Swan" and the Coens' "True Grit" are riding a huge wave of anticipation. And we are certainly looking forward to it. The film boats the usual pedigree of high talent in front of the camera -- Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld -- and once again, the directors have assigned scoring duties to composer and ...

Some new "True Grit" characters posters have landed today and they keep up the solid tone the film's marketing team have evinced thus far, that of a gritty, no holds barred western from the Coen Brothers.
