    James Franco: Everywhere

Actor James Franco seems to be everywhere these days. He's starring in serious dramas (Howl) and goofy comedies (Date Night), directing a Saturday Night Live doc and a Cannes short, making art (he has an upcoming New York solo show of photos, drawings and videos) and falling asleep during class at Columbia's MFA program in creative writing (he's prepping a children's book). While Franco, 32, is not the first actor to pursue artistic outlets other than on-screen performing, his choices do reflect a certain self-aware humor and intelligence. After all, he plays an unpredictable painter named "Franco" on General Hospital who seduces a girl at MO...

Raavan's Bachchan and Rai Do The Ramayana: Badly

Big-budget Bollywood adventure Raavan, starring the golden couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai--from writer-director Mani Ratnam, director of Guru, with a rousing score by Slumdog Millionaire Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman--is a big overwrought dud. It's one of those dead-serious over-scale extrava...

LAFF: Kids Are All Right Scores During Lakers Riot, 30 Films to See

The Thursday night opening of the LA Film Fest was not quite what the organizers had hoped for, with the NBA final game right next door at the Staples Center. That was one risk the LAFF took this year by moving the festival downtown. Film Independent chief Dawn Hudson insists that the influx of apar...

James Cameron, in his recent round of interviews about the Gulf oil spill, said he had assembled an ad hoc task force of leading Woods Hole scientists, and so he did. Here's the result of their labors. Read it and weep. A video report is on the jump.

Knight and Day: Cruise/Diaz Original Action Comedy Works

No question that everyone gets that audiences are suffering sequel and remake overload. But Vulture's Claude Brodesser-Akner overstates the case that Hollywood is back to chasing originals when he cites a few anecdotal examples of recent studio buys.

Trailer Watch: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is by far my favorite of C.S. Lewis's Narnia books. I read it over and over. A trailer is scheduled to run before Toy Story 3 on June 18. This foreign one does not show Eustace, a great surly character who falls into a picture and accidentally joins Lucy and Edmund Pev...

Paramount picked up George Gallo's internet porn origin story Middle Men after the hard-R film closed February's Santa Barbara Film Festival--but the filmmakers had to supply their own prints and ads (the new norm). The movie follows the meteoric ascendency of businessman Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) a...
