Twilight's Pattinson Flogs Indie How to Be

While Brit first-timer Oliver Irving's micro-indie How to Be may not be high art, because it stars Twilight star Rob Pattinson, it has a target audience. The flick about a sadsack guitar player who moves back in with his parents after his girlfriend dumps him had been seeking a distrib since its Sla...

    Wolverine: Multiple Endings

Magazine editors know that movie fans will buy multiple collectible covers. On that principle, Marvel has added different endings at the end of the credits to Wolverine so that fans will sample all the versions of the film, director Gavin Hood told one L.A. press screening on Friday night, reports A...

Trailer Watch: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

We've all seen our share of Harry Potter movies but this trailer for the Half-Blood Prince really creeped me out.

Recession Era Movies: From Fast & Furious to Grapes of Wrath

As Fast & Furious does better at the weekend b.o. than it has any right to do--the weekend was up 75-80% from last year-- Entertainment Weekly's Mark Harris sees the first casualty of the recession: ambition. If all audiences want is escape, he worries, that's all the studios and TV networks will gi...

    ShoWest: Strong Sony Summer Preview

I flew into Vegas Wednesday morning to catch day three of the annual ShoWest exhibitors' confab. I was spoiled by my last plane trip: American Airlines boasted wifi (I couldn't blog on Typepad, though) on both coastal flights for $12.95 each way. No such luck on Southwest today.

ShoWest: Bullock vs. Reynolds in The Proposal

I'm a sucker for a good rom-com. Disney screened The Proposal, the latest rom-com from director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses). From column A comes the uptight urban workaholic nightmare boss (Sandra Bullock) who is thrown into column B, a rural fish-out-of-water situation with the endearing family of her handsome, ambitious, super-competent assistant (Ryan Reynolds). Think Sweet Home Alabama meets the old Bullock/Bill Paxton Pullman chestnut While You Were Sleeping. In other words, we find out how sensitive the bitch boss really is (she lost her family years ago) while she falls in love with her assistant--and vice versa--and his family. It work...

SXSW: Hill and Rogen Talk Observe and Report

Monday morning I interviewed Observe and Report writer-director Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way) and star Seth Rogen. The movie played well on Monday night at the Paramount. It's a very dark reality-based comedy about fantasy and self-delusion, basically. The flipcam interview is broken into two parts:

    Trailer Watch: Inglourious Basterds

Here's the Inglourious Basterds trailer that debuted on E.T. Tuesday night--in all its glory. I have a feeling that we're just starting to see what Brad Pitt can do. This is where maturity pays off for male movie stars--who tend to come into their own in their 40s. Look at Pitt's year: Burn After Re...
