Gabe Toro's Best Films Of 2011

Great art challenges. Bad art flatters. But those of us who don’t dedicate our lives to film don’t always seek to be challenged. Sometimes we want to experience art at our leisure. One doesn’t schedule, or plan the impact of art (making a film review deceptive, as it can never be a critics’ final th...

'The Help' & 'The Artist' Lead The Field At Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations

In the seventeen years that they've been running for, the annual Screen Actors' Guild Awards have proven to be a pretty reliable precursor for the acting categories at the Academy Awards. And why shouldn't they? With the actors who nominate their peers for the Oscars overwhelmingly being...

Nick Nolte Says Refusal to Applaud Elia Kazan Cost Him Relationship with Martin Scorcese

Nick Nolte has never been one to hold back on ruffling people's feathers. He famously (or maybe infamously) lost the role of Superman after he claimed the character was schizophrenic, and still, at the tender age of 70, carries with him a fuck-em-if-they-can't-take-a-joke attitude that ...

Weekend Box Office: 'Contagion' Infects Box Office In Year's Weakest Overall Frame

It looks like “Contagion” lived up to its name, landing at number one with $23 million and sapping the rest of the lineup of its health, creating one of the genuinely weakest weekends of the year. The Steven Soderbergh thriller, loaded with familiar faces, benefited from a savvy ad campaign and a fe...

Interview: Joel Edgerton Talks Playing A Nice Tough Guy In 'Warrior'

Also Has No Reservations About Tackling Tom Buchanan In Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'Swinging and punching its way into theaters this weekend is “Warrior,” a tale of two estranged brothers who find themselves reunited in the MMA (that is, Mixed Martial Arts) ring. As to be expected, much of the screentime of the two leads, Joel Edgerton (playing the older brother, Brendan) and Tom Hardy (as the younger, Tommy), involves skillfully busting their co-stars up as they make their way through the ranks of a championship tournament to eventually face one another for the ultimate prize: a very large check both could use. We recently had the chanc...

In Theaters: 'Shark Night 3D,' or 'A Good Old Fashioned Orgy'?

Feel that morning chill? That's right, it's undoubtedly September, and film fans should be rejoicing. Goodbye and good riddance, August 2011, you were not one of those Augusts that defied the stereotype as the summer dumping ground. In the past few years, auteurs like Edgar Wright ("Scott Pilgrim vs...

Watch: Tom Hardy Goes All Bane On Some Guy In Clip From 'Warrior'

With summer behind us and Oscar buzz in full swing, there is one film that could potentially get itself into the ring, Gavin O'Connor's "Warrior." As we noted in our review from Empire Big Screen, conceptually, the movie brings nothing new to the table. This writer recently caught the film as well, and it's essentially two "Rocky" movies rolled into one. However, it is an enormously affecting, truly rousing crowd-pleaser, that if given the right push by Lionsgate could sneak in as a much higher quality "The Blind Side" sort of candidate. It's a longshot, but we will say this -- we seriously hope at the very least the studio gets behind Nick N...

Empire Big Screen '11 Review: 'Warrior' Is Silly, Over-Familiar & Enormously Effective

Considering that it's the fastest rising sport in the world and that it's inherently cinematic in a way that, say, baseball isn't, it's surprising that Hollywood hasn't made greater hay out of mixed martial arts (or MMA). For the newcomer, it's essentially a blend of boxing, wrestling and a good old bar fight, a mix you would have thought would have led to far more movie outings than David Mamet's "Redbelt" and next year's Kevin James (yes, Kevin James) vehicle "Here Comes the Boom." But a movie opening next month, Gavin O'Connor's "Warrior," which we caught today as the first surprise public screening at Empire Big Screen in London, is plant...

Watch: Tom Hardy & Joel Edgerton Fight Each Other In Trailer For 'Warrior'

Tom Hardy breaks out his "Bronson" bod once again for "Warrior," the MMA fighting drama that finds Joel Edgerton playing his brother and centers on the siblings who will have to face each other in the ring for money and their father's love or something like that.
