“Exodus: Gods and Kings” Final Trailer

Heading into Oscar season last year, both Christian Bale and Ridley Scott had hotly-anticipated projects they hoped would take them to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood come February.

Yet Bale’s early December release of “Out of the Furnace” fell on deaf ears, while Scott’s “The Counselor” was met with much worse noise from critics. While the Cormac McCarthy-penned “Counselor” has now found a small cult following for its oddball awfulness and Bale did gain Oscar recognition with “American Hustle,” neither friend of the Academy represents the sure-thing status of old, particularly Scott, who frankly needs a hit after “The Counselor,” “Prometheus,” “Robin Hood,” and “Body of Lies” all were met with mixed reviews at best.

Enter “Exodus: God and Kings,” a late-coming Oscar contender most certainly riding a dark horse. In the latest and last trailer, 20th Century Fox pushes two aspects aimed to connect with a wide audience (and Oscar voters): “Gladiator” and incredible VFX work. Whether or not you’re into either, “Gladiator” is arguably Scott’s most accessible, popular work (with “Alien” being a strong second) as well as the most recent reminder of his former glory. It won Best Picture, after all, and perhaps audiences will sign up to see another swords-and-sandals epic from the man who did one very well 14 years ago.

As for the visual effects, take a look at the trailer for yourself (and check out a slew of new TV spots on YouTube). Those waves…

“Exodus: Gods and Kings” hits theaters December 12.
