‘Petting Zoo’ Clip

On the verge of high school graduation, Layla wins a college scholarship but then unexpectedly finds herself pregnant. Surrounded by family pressure to keep the baby, Layla is forced to grow up quickly in a gritty world – torn between a romance with a local boy, family and faith pressures, and her desire to escape for a better life. Set on the outskirts of San Antonio, where filmmaker Micah Magee grew up, the film captures with authenticity the mood of small town life in Texas and the very real dilemma of a young woman wanting desperately to grow up and transcend her circumstances. San Antonio has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the U.S., and writer/director Micah choose to explore this topic with an eloquent and artful film. This film is based on Micah’s real life experience grappling with her own teen pregnancy in Texas. After world premiering last month at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival, this is the film’s North American premiere.
