Swinton Talks I Am Love, Orlando Reissue, and a Film with Uncle Boonmee Director

Tilda Swinton is a brainy actress who swings easily from passion indie projects (The Deep End, Julia and the upcoming I Am Love) to studio fare, from arch-villains to objects of desire, and from mother in the Scottish highlands to glamourous globe-trotting movie star. She won an Oscar as George Cloo...

Live New York Interviews Promo Love Ranch and Winter's Bone

The NYT is getting into the live pre-movie opening interview racket, something Apple iTunes has been doing for some time. This week, The NYT online will live-stream a webcast of NYT critic Janet Maslin's interview with Love Ranch star Helen Mirren (who won an Oscar for The Queen) and the film's director Taylor Hackford (Ray, The Devil's Advocate), her husband, on June 14th (6:30-8pm EST). Based on a true story about a couple who opened Las Vegas's first legal brothel, the film stars Mirren and Joe Pesci as Grace and Charlie Botempo. Although the New York City event is sold out, you can catch it on either LiveStream.com or Facebook. The trail...

Trailer Watch: Can You Handle the Dogtooth?

Dogtooth, included in indieWIRE's "Summer Preview: The 25 Must-See Films" and The Playlist's "2010 Anticipated: 30 Films We've Already Seen" is a do-not-miss film experience. But can you handle the intense, sexually transgressive, claustrophobic family drama? (There were many walkouts at the Palm S...

MTV Movie Awards: Bullock Should Have Kissed Betty White, Eclipse Clip, Cruise and JLo Dance

As I've said, most awards shows are about people promoting themselves. Wouldn't it be a great idea to get the three stars to intro the Twilight: Eclipse video? (It's below, along with clips from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Last Airbender, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.) Let's hav...

    Godard Must-See: Breathless Trailer

Run don't walk to see New Wave critic-turned-filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 Breathless, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. I screened this movie for my USC Film Criticism students and they scarfed it up. This black-and-white Godard film, at least, which introduced the disjunctive jump-cut editing that inspired Arthur Penn and Dede Allen's Bonnie and Clyde, is still a breath of fresh air, even 50 years later. (See the trailer below.) On May 28 Rialto is releasing a pristine 35 mm print with new subtitles struck from a restored negative supervised by Godard's director of photography, Raoul Coutard, who used a held-held camera with m...
