Inspired by Morgan Matthews’ 2007 documentary, “Beautiful Young Minds,” “X+Y” is a coming-of-age story focused on Nathan (“Ender’s Game” star Asa Butterfield), a young math prodigy who has trouble relating to other people, including his own mother. Impressed by Nathan’s intellectual gifts, one of his teachers, Mr. Humphreys, takes Nathan under his wing. With the help of Mr. Humphreys’ coaching, Nathan manages to secure a spot on Great Britain’s team for the International Mathematics Olympiad. When the team travels to Taipei to train for the competition, he meets a beautiful Chinese girl who makes him feel things he never before thought he could feel. Sally Hawkins, Rafe Spall and Eddie Marsan co-star as Nathan’s mother, Mr. Humphreys and the training camp squad leader, respectively. Actress Jo Yang makes her debut as Nathan’s love interest.
