NYC Short Film Fest to Debut at Sony Theaters This Fall; Countrywide Tour of Winners to Follow

by Eugene Hernandez

A new film festival showcasing short-subject films is set to debut
November 5th in New York City. The two day event, founded by Lisa
Walborsky and Jeremiah Newton, will unspool at Manhattan’s Sony Theatres
Lincoln Square. Following the fest, winners in each of the events’
categories (Animation, Comedy, Documentary, Drama, Experimental,
Foreign, and Student) will tour the country.

Reached at her office yesterday, festival director and co-founder Lisa
Walborsky told indieWIRE that despite the doubts and criticism of some
who question her ability to pull the program together, she is committed
to making the festival a reality. “It’s the first time out and we are
gonna do it,” she explained, “it (the festival) certainly has the right
spirit behind it.”

Since registering as a non-profit organization in late March, Walborsky
(the former Program Coordinator for the First Look film Series)
explained that she has worked hard to put together a quality
infrastructure. She recently secured two screens at a high-profile
multiplex venue (Sony Lincoln Square), a workspace in the basement of
big budget films’ (“Meet Joe Black”) production office, and computers from
an acquaintance whose company (The NFL) was upgrading equipment.
Organizers have already secured the support of MovieFone and Time Out New York.

Expressing incredible enthusiasm for the festival, Walborsky admits that
a number details still need to be addressed, she is meeting with
advisors this week to solidify logistics and a marketing plan, yet she
voices a commitment to making this a “major” event — her goal, “to help
educate the public about short films.”

Co-founder Jeremiah Newton, Industry Liaison for NYU‘s Tisch School of
the Arts, and Walborsky have announced a large advisory board of
filmmakers and executives, including: Joel & Ethan Coen, Jim Jarmusch,
Ang Lee, Susan Seidelman, Bob Hawk, and Annette Insdorf.
