Golden Globe Nominations announced, "Titanic" Leads with 8

James Cameron’s “Titanic” raked in 8 Golden Globe nominations yesterday,
with James L. Brooks’ “As Good As It Gets” bagging six nods and
Curtis Hanson’s, “L.A. Confidential” nabbing five. Non studio films
grabbed the same number of nominations this year as last, seventeen.

Miramax’s Oscar contender “Good Will Hunting” led all indies with four
nods, including: best picture-drama; best actor in a drama (Matt Damon);
best supporting actor (Robin Williams), and best screenplay (Damon and
Ben Affleck), while New Line’s Barry Levinson-helmed comedy “Wag The Dog
came in with three nominations: best picture-musical or comedy, best
actor-musical or comedy (Dustin Hoffman) and best screenplay (Hilary
Henkin and David Mamet). New Line’s other nominee, Paul Thomas
Anderson’s “Boogie Nights” snagged two nods, with Burt Reynolds and
Julianne Moore both pulling down supporting noms.

Fox Searchlight, the specialty arm of Twentieth Century Fox came in with
nominations for “The Full Monty” (best picture-musical or comedy) and “The Ice Storm” (best supporting actress, Sigourney Weaver). “Monty” was
produced and distributed by Searchlight, while Ang Lee’s “Ice Storm” was
produced by Gotham indie production company, Good Machine. The lone
nomination for long-beleagured (and deceased) distributor Orion
Pictures, came for Oscar contender Peter Fonda for his role in “Ulee’s Gold“.

The remaining Miramax nominations were split between four films, with
Quentin Tarantino’s Christmans release, “Jackie Brown” nabbing two (Pam
Grier and Samuel L. Jackson) and “The Wings Of The Dove” (Helena Bonham
Carter), “Mrs. Brown” (Judi Dench) and “Chasing Amy” (Joey Lauren Adams),
all in lead acting categories, pulling in one nomination apiece.

The best foreign language film nominees were: “Ma Vie En Rose“-Belgium,
Artemisia“-France, “The Best Man“-Italy, “Lea“-Germany, and “The Thief“-Russia.
