Stipe, October, Warners Form Single Cell Trio

October Films has inked Michael Stipe’s Single Cell Pictures to a two-year
development, production, and distribution deal for films and the two
companies also entered into a joint agreement with Warner Brothers
to produce and distribute soundtracks. The deal follows on the
heels of Single Cell’s deal at New Line Cinema, which ended earlier this
year. Single Cell is managed by Stipe’s production partner Sandy Stern, who has
produced films including the Christian Slater/Samantha Mathis starrer “Pump Up The Volume” and exec produced Alan Rudolph’s “Equinox“, and the company’s creative
exec is Farley Zeigler, formerly a development exec at Propaganda.

Single Cell’s current lineup of projects include exec producing Todd
Haynes’ upcoming 70’s glam rock pic, “Velvet Goldmine” (Christian Bale, Toni
Collette, Ewan McGregor) and Mary Harron’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’
novel, “American Psycho“. Films in development at the company include: Spike
Jonze’s directorial debut, “Being John Malkovich” and New Line Cinema’s
Powers That Be“, set to be directed by Peter Horton.

The Stipe deal comes on the heels of another October pact, that one with
Stanley Tucci, award winning writer/actor/director of the 1996 indie
hit, “Big Night“, along with his producing partner, Beth Alexander. The
pair inked a multi-year first-look deal with the distrib in October’s
first major deal with a filmmaker since Universal‘s 51% buyout of the
company this past Summer. The pact involves Tucci writing, directing and
possibly starring in films produced by Tucci and Alexander via their
production company, Cold Press Productions.
