SAG Heaps Kudos on Indies

The nominations for the fourth annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were
announced on Tuesday. Miramax cleaned up, with nine nominations in the solo
categories and one for “Good Will Hunting” in the outstanding performance
by a cast category. “Good Will” also picked up nods for Matt Damon in the
leading male category and a nomination each for Robin Williams and Minnie
Driver in supporting categories, giving that film the lead with four nods.
Two other films picked up multiple nominations, New Line’s “Boogie Nights
(supporting nods for Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds and an ensemble
nomination), and Miramax’s “The Wings of the Dove” (Helena Bonham
Carter-lead actress and Allison Elliot-supporting actress) and “Mrs. Brown
(Judi Dench and Billy Connolly in lead categories).

Several films received single nominations, including in the lead
categories, Robert Duvall (“The Apostle“), Dustin Hoffman (“Wag the Dog“),
likely Oscar nominee, Peter Fonda for “Ulee’s Gold,” Pam Grier for “Jackie
” and Robin Wright Penn for “She’s So Lovely.” The lead actress
category contained six nominations, as opposed to five nominations in the
other four groups.

The Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award will be presented to
Elizabeth Taylor, and the ceremonies will be televised live on TNT on
Sunday, March 8th at 8:00 p.m.
