Avignon/NY Fest Announces Tribute, Events

The 4th Annual Avignon/New York Film Festival is set to run from April 24
through May 3, and features a tribute to the legendary late filmmaker, Sam
Fuller among other events. The festival will screen several Fuller films,
including “Pickup on South Street,” “Steel Helmet,” “Park Row” and “White
,” and will host a round-table discussion entitled: “Fuller: The Man and
his Legacy.” Expected to attend this discussion are long-time Fuller
enthusiasts Quentin Tarantino, Curtis Hanson and Jonathan Demme. In
addition to Fuller, the festival is paying tribute to filmmakers Paul
Schrader, Larry Cohen and Alexandre Rockwell. Schrader’s latest film
Affliction” (Nick Nolte, James Coburn and Sissy Spacek) will screen, along
with “American Gigolo” (1980) and “Mishima” (1985), while Rockwell will
screen his latest film, “Louis and Frank,” along with 1989’s “Sons” and
1986’s “Somebody to Love.” These latter two contain walk-ons by Fuller.
Fuller is also featured in one of the two Larry Cohen films featured at
this year’s event, 1997’s “A Return to Salem’s Lot.” Also screening as part
of the Cohen tribute will be 1977’s “The Private Lives of J. Edgar Hoover.”

Among the seminars included in this year’s festival is a three day
symposium entitled: “Screenwriting From the Heart.” Conducted by Actors
Studio/New School MFA program professor, James Ryan, this seminar will deal
with “creating story from character”, rather than using the traditional
three act structure of screenwriting.

The lineup of the festival, including the French and American films, as
