Lars Von Trier’s Cannes competition entry, “The Idiots,” has been acquired by
October Films for North American distribution, the company announced
yesterday. The deal marks the fourth Von Trier project to be handled by the
company, along with “The Kingdom” “The Kingdom II” and “Breaking the Waves.”

Described as a “satire about a grieving young woman who finds a home with
a group of young people who share an interest in idiocy and in confronting
societal norms by posing as idiots,” the film was produced by Vibeke
and Zentropa Entertainment. In announcing the acquisition,
October Films partners Scott Greenstein, Bingham Ray, and John Schmidt
said, “Lars Von Trier is among the most brilliant directors in the world. We
have long admired his unique vision and style that enable him to tell stories
in a way that no other director working today can.”
