The New York and San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festivals have both
programmed Lisa Cholodenko’s “High Art” as their opening night films on
June 4th and 18th, respectively. The Ally Sheedy starrer was picked up
at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival (where it garnered the Waldo Salt
Screenwriting Award) by October Films and will be released in New York
on June 12th. The film was also picked for the Directors’ Fortnight at
the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The film has been described as an
edgy urban drama about the relationship between Syd (Radha Mitchell) “a
budding photo magazine editor” and Lucy (Sheedy) a famous photographer
retired at the age of forty.

The New York fest has added additional venues this year, with screenings
being held at The New School’s Tishman Auditorium and The Brooklyn
Museum of Art’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium in addition to the
festival’s main venue, the Joseph Papp Public Theater.

The San Francisco fest will run from June 18-28 at the Castro and
Victoria theaters, as well as at the renowned repertory house, the Roxie
Cinema. The closing night film will be P.J. Castellaneta’s Sundance
screener, “Relax…It’s Just Sex.” The film stars Jennifer Tilly
(“Bound“), Lori Petty (“Tank Girl“) and Mitchell Anderson (“Party of
“). Castellaneta’s debut feature “Together Alone” picked up the
fest’s Audience Award in 1989. Other features confirmed for San
Francisco include Jeff Dupre’s documentary “Out of the Past,” Maya
Gallus’ “Erotica: A Journey Into Female Sexuality” and Hilary Brougher’s
Sticky Fingers of Time.”
