AMPAS Announces Foreign Student Award Winner and Student Academy Award Honorees

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continued its
“off-season” work recently, bestowing this year’s Honorary Foreign
Student Award, and the winners for the 25th Anniversary Student Academy
Awards competition
. The 21 films of the regional winners are currently
being screened by the full academy membership, and the 12 winners, along
with the foreign student winner will take part in a week of film related
activities, culminating in the awards ceremony at the Academy’s Samuel
Goldwyn Theater on June 14th.

Thorsten Schmidt of the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ludwigsburg,
Germany was the recipient of the honorary foreign award for his film
Rochade.” This is the second year in a row, and fourth time overall,
that a German student has won the award, tying England with the most
student wins. Two previous foreign student award winners have gone on to
win Best Foreign Language Film Oscars, with Jan Sverak (a student in the
former Czechoslovakia) and Mike van Diem of the Netherlands both taking
home the gold. Van Diem this year for “Character” and Sverak for last
year’s “Kolya.”

The winners of the 25th Anniversary Student Academy Awards hail from
seven different schools, with multiple winners coming from NYU and
Stanford University. There are three levels of awards in most categories
— gold, silver and bronze- with the students being unaware of which they
are receiving until the ceremony on June 14th.
