>> The 22nd Atlanta Film & Video Festival closed Sunday night at the Carter
Center in Midtown Atlanta. Accodring to organizers, 198 films and videos
in over 87 programs were screened, and 57 visiting artists traveled to
the event. “The increased number of visiting artists is a boon,”
quipped Festival Coordinator Gabriel Wardell. “The presence of visiting
artists separates a festival from a showcase. It breathes life into the
event.” According to organizers, total attendance was estimated at
about 7,500, a 25% increase over lthe 1997 event. Audience awards were
announced on Sunday.

The prize went to Darryl Lemont Wharton’s “Detention”, an after
school morality tale set in an inner-city Baltimore high school, while
the Southeastern prize, a package of production goods and services
worth over $50,000, was awarded to Nick Searcy and Sean Bridgers for
“Paradise Falls.” Bridgers commented, “This is a fitting tribute to our
Nick and I made this film because [as actors] we got tired of playing
characters who were racist, tobacco chewin’ idiots. Well, we kept in the
tobacco chewin’.”
