Neil La Bute’s “Your Friends and Neighbors” will will open the
Competition at the 1998 San Sebastian Film Festival on September
17th, while Peter Howitt’s “Sliding Doors” will close the section. Other
films set to screen are: Bill Condon’s “Gods and Monsters,” Peter Berg’s
Very Bad Things,” Alejandro Agresti’s “El Viento se llevo lo que,”
Carlos Carrera’s “Un Embrujo,” Francisco Lombard’s “No se lo digas a
,” Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s “Barrio,” Gerardo Herrero’s “Frontera
,” Robert Guedigurian’s “A la place du coeur” and Olivier Assayas’
Fin aout debut September,” Abolfazi Jalili’s “Don,” and Hirokazu
Kore-ada’s “After Life.”

>> 14th Film Arts Fest to Open with Smith Film

Drylongso (ordinary)” by Cauleen Smith will open the 1998 Film
Arts Festival
on November 4th at the Castro Theater in San Francisco.
The film is her feature film debut. Other films set to screen at the
event are: Gabe Weisert’s first feature “Fishing with Gandhi,” Carol P.
Chamberland’s documentary “The Legend of Bop City,” and Catherine
Ryan and Gary Weimberg’s “The Story of Mother’s and Daughters.”
The festival runs through November 8th.

>> Nassau Cinema Exposition Winners Named

The Salute to Independent Filmmakers Gala and Awards Ceremony will
be held at the Nassau Independent Cinema Exposition (NICE) on
September 11, 1998 on Long Island, NY. The Nassau County Film
Commission has announced that Steve Buscemi (“Trees Lounge,”
Living in Oblivion“) will be honored with the Creative Achievement
and HBO VP Dom Serio will be awarded the Humanitarian Award.
Several filmmakers will be honored, including: Fred Carpenter (Long
Island Filmmaker Achievement Award), Russ Brandt & Brian J.
DePalma — “Falling Sky” (Best Feature Film, 35mm), Craig
Kestel — “Kegless” (Best Feature, 16mm) and Joshua M. Greene with
Shiva Kumar — “Witness: Voices of the Holocaust” (Best Documentary).
