>> Urbanworld Festival Wraps Year Two With Award Winners

Clement Virgo’s “The Planet of Junior Brown” won the award for Best
Feature at the 2nd Urbanworld Film Festival which concluded in New York
City over the weekend. The story of a teen musical prodigy, the film is
Virgo’s second feature. Sterling Macer, Jr’s “Park Day” won the
Audience Favorite award, and Darryl LeMont Wharton took the Best
Director prize for his film, “Detention.”

The Festival, which ended on Sunday, presented its award for Best
Documentary to Mark Daniels for his film, “Classified X.” While the
event’s first screenplay award went to Gabriel Tolliver and Jake Ann
Jones for “Spook City.” The script performed in a reading on Friday
that was directed by LaTanya Richardson and starred Saul Williams (“Slam
,” “Slam“). Finally, the award for Best Short went to Zola
Mazeko’s “The Foreigner.” All festival award winners received the
Urbanworld Trophy and $1,000 worth of Kodak film stock, while the
screenplay prize winners received a cash prize of $1,000 that was
donated by Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson.

>> San Sebastian Honoring Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins is set to receive the 1998 European Donostia Award at
the San Sebastian International Film Festival, according to Variety.
The festival, which runs September 17 – 26 in Spain, will welcome
Hopkins for the European premiere of “The Mask of Zorro” and for the
pre-screening award ceremony including the presentation of the prize by
“Zorro” actor Antonio Banderas. Previous recipients of the award
include Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau, and Jeremy Irons, according to
the Hollywood trade publication.
