Paramount Classics Makes Toronto Acquisition; President David Dinerstein Discusses Company's First F

President David Dinerstein Discusses Company’s First Film Buy

David Dinerstein and Ruth Vitale, Co-Presidents of the new specialty division
Paramount Classics, confirmed their company’s first acquisition with the
announcement that they have picked up Tod Williams’ “The Adventures of
Sebastian Cole
.” The film, an 80’s era comedy about a small-town teenager
who is raised by a stepfather who is a pre-operative transsexual, screened
here Friday night and was the subject of immediate buzz. Shortly after the
screening, top executives at one studio specialty company confirmed their
enthusiasm for the movie, but Williams and film reps Cassian Elwes and Rena
Ronson of WMA Independents ultimately decided to go with the new Paramount
outfit. “There were quite a number of companies interested,” explained

In a conversation with indieWIRE yesterday, Dinerstein described the movie
as, “Poignant, real, and extremely funny.” While he explaned that a release
date for the movie has not yet been determined, he confirmed that the company
hopes to take the movie on the festival circuit. “Cole” was produced by Karen
Barber and Jasmine Kosovic and the title role is played by actor Adrian Grenier
(“Celebrity,” “Next To You“). The acquisition marks the first finished film buy
for Paramount, following the company’s deal to produce a new film by screenwriter
Ron Bass.

Six months after announcing the formation of the company, Paramount Classics
remains based at the Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood with a small staff.
Dinerstein confirmed that the company will grow this fall by making additional
staff announcements, as well as building a team to market and promote Classics’
