1999 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Lineup

Twenty-nine feature films make up Sundance’s 1999 World Cinema
section, which this year includes a number of noted
favorites from around the world festival circuit: Yugoslavian Emir
Kusturica’s buoyant hit of the Venice and New York Film Festivals,
Black Cat, White Cat” coming soon from October Films, Tom
Tykwer’s pumping German-language Sony Pictures Classics pick-up,
Run, Lola, Run“, and French auteur Gaspar Noe’s brutal Cannes
premiere, “I Stand Alone” which Strand Releasing has been circling
for months. Popular pics from Toronto include British director Simon
Shore’s “Get Real” (Paramount Classic‘s second acquisition), Japanese
director Kore-Eda Hirokasu’s meditative favorite “After Life,” Serbian
director Srdjan Dragojevic’s “The Wounds,” Kirgizstan’s first foreign
Oscar entry, “The Adopted Son” and only one film from the international
collection of millennium movies “2000 Seen By. . .,” Abderrahmane
Sissako’s “Life on Earth.” Montreal festival favorite, “2 Seconds” by
Manon Briand will also screen.

Among anticipated English language foreign films (always hot
properties) comes Thom Fitzgerald’s follow up to “The Hanging Garden“,
Beefcake” a documentary/fiction film about the origin of men’s muscle
magazines in the 1950’s; Toronto Critic’s Award winner “Praise” by
Australian first timer John Curran; “When Love Comes” by New Zealand’s
Garth Maxwell; and “Southpaw” by Ireland’s Liam McGrath. Latino films
are also well-represented this year with two films from Mexico, “Under
California: The Limits of Time
” by Carlos Bolado and “Under a Spell” by
Carlos Carrera; three films from Spain, Julio Medem’s “The Lovers of the
Arctic Circle
” , “Barrio” by Fernando Leon de Aranoa and “P. Tinto’s Miracle
by Javier Fesser; also included is “Friendly Fire” from Braziian new wave
director Beto Brant (“Belly Up”1997), “Silvia Prieto” by Argentina’s Martin
Rejtman, and “Little Thieves, Big Thieves” from Venezuela’s Alejandro
