"Monsters," "Station" and "Blues" Named Top Board of Review Picks

Three 1998 Sundance Film Festival debuts were recognized as top films by
the National Board of Review earlier this week. Bill Condon’s “Gods &
” was named the best film of 1998 , while Walter Salles’ “Central
” won the Best Foreign Language Film Award and Barbara Koppel’s
Wild Man Blues” took the Best Documentary prize. Steven Spielberg’s
Saving Private Ryan” was the runner up to “Monsters” on the Board’s top
ten list and Shekar Kapur won the Best Director award for “Elizabeth,”
which ranked third on the list.

Ian McKellen was awarded the Best Actor award for his leading role in “Gods
& Monsters,” while Fernanda Montenegra won the Best Actress prize for
“Central Station.” In the supporting categories, Ed Harris won for “The
Truman Show
” and “Stepmom” and Christina Ricci won for her roles in three
films — “Opposite of Sex,” “Buffalo 66,” and “Pecker.”

Happiness” was recognized with an award for its Ensemble Performance and
Bernardo Bertolucci has been named the recipient of the Freedom of
Expression award. A Special Achievement in Filmmaking award was announced
for Roberto Benigni (“Life is Beautiful”), the Career Achievement Award
will go to actor Michael Caine and the Billy Wilder Award recipient is
Martin Scorsese.

The awards will be presented on February 8th in New York City.
