DAILY BRIEFS: Docfest '99 Lineup; Millard Leaves Sundance; Indie Tour Launch

>> NYC docfest Sets Lineup for Second Annual Event

A slate of premieres are on tap for the 2nd Annual docfest: the New York
International Documentary Festival
(June 2 – 6). The event will open at
the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) Rose Cinemas with a screening of
Adrian Belic‘s “Genghis Blues,” while the balance of festival screenings
will unspool at the DGA Theater on 57th St. in Manhattan. The festival will
close with Jesper Jargil‘s “The Humiliated,” which documents the making of
the Dogma film, “The Idiots,” and its director Lars Von Trier.

Films screening at docfest are: Jessica Yu‘s “The Living Museum” (N.Y.
Premiere), Chuck Workman‘s “The Source” (N.Y. Premiere), Nick Kurzon‘s
Super Chief” (N.Y. Premiere), Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen‘s “On the
,” Jem Cohen‘s “Instrument” (N.Y. Premiere), Dan Reed‘s “The Valley
(U.S. Premiere), Emmanuel Thorbecke‘s “In Rhythm of Time” (World Premiere),
Marco Amenta‘s “One Girl Against the Mafia” (U.S. Premiere), Andrzej
‘s “Battu’s Bioscope” (U.S. Premiere), Paul Jay‘s “Hitman Hart:
Wrestling with Shadows
” (N.Y. Theatrical Premiere), Grant Gee‘s “Meeting
People is Easy
,” Frederick Wiseman‘s “Law & Order,” William Wyler‘s “The
Memphis Belle
” and Louis Hayward‘s “The Battle of Tarawa,” Erik Pauser and
Johan Soderberg‘s “Lucky People Center International” (U.S. Premiere).

Filmmaker Frederick Wiseman will be on hand for a dialogue with other
docfest directors, and the Festival will also host an exploration of
digital technologies for low-budget documentary production.

>> Millard Exits Sundance For Trimark

Sundance Film Festival fixture RJ Millard has left his post as the event’s
Media Executive Manager to become the Director of Corporate Publicity for
Trimark Pictures. Millard, who is based at the company’s Santa Monica
office, was an account executive for Stephen Rivers & Associates and has
also worked at the Utah Film Commission as a Marketing/Producer Services

Commenting on the hire in a prepared statement, Trimark Chief
Administrative Officer and Executive Vice President Cami Winikoff said, “We
are very excited to have RJ come on board. His experience and his
relationships within the independent community are very relevant to the
direction Trimark is taking and we look forward to working with him and
having him help shape our company’s image.”

>> Classically Indie Tour Kicks Off in Manhattan

Following tonight’s opening reception in New York, the Classically
Independent Film Festival
from Dockers and the IFP kicks off in Manhattan
tomorrow (Friday) at Film Forum — actors Tori Spelling (“Trick“) and Steve
(“Happy, Texas“) have been named the event’s national spokespeople.

Three mini-films were commissioned with Dockers “Independent Vision”
grants in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, with filmmakers here
creating shorts on the theme of independence. Joel Hopkins (“The
Independent”), Gabriel Tolliver (“The Big Blue Line”), and Cristina A. Kotz
(“Off I Go”) creating the 45 second to one-minute films for the
Manhattan event. Additionally, nine shorts will screen during the
festival: “Real Jokes” by Jonathan Judge, “Herb” by Amie Steir, “The Last
Guy To Let You Down
” by Rolf Gibbs, “Second Skin” by Amy Talkington,
I Remember” by David Chartier and Avi Zev Weider, “The Second Bakery Attack
by Wolf Baschung, “Ruben” by Grant Barbeito, “Little Red Riding Hood
by David Kaplan and “Fuzzy Logic” by Tom Krueger.

The tour heads to the Music Box in Chicago May 21st – 24th, the Castro
Theater in San Francisco June 4th – 7th, the Writers Guild Theater in Los
Angeles June 25th – 28th, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis July 23
– 24 and 30 – 31.
