ARTISAN DIGITAL DEAL…Artisan President Amir Malin and Intertainer Chairman & Co-CEO Richard Baskin announced yesterday an agreement to co-develop, produce and distribute five feature length motion pictures to be shot and edited completely digitally. Intertainer will showcase the films on its entertainment on demand service, and Artisan will retain all domestic rights to the projects. The two companies are now reviewing possible scripts and treatments to develop and produce with average budgets of $500,000.

Reached yesterday at his office in New York, Malin indicated that Intertainer is getting the exclusive video on demand window on the pictures, but the intent is to first release these movies theatrically.

“We are looking for films that can be developed or produced on lower budget levels,” Malin offered, “This makes a lot of sense because a lot of the downside is being covered by Intertainer.”

Intertainer bills itself as a new way to get movies, music, and television anytime you want on your PC or TV and boasts strategic partnerships with Comcast, US West, Sony, Intel and NBC. Artisan Entertainment distributed Bennett Miller’s 1998 digitally shot doc, “The Cruise“, and this week acquired Miguel Arteta’s digital feature, “Chuck & Buck“, from Blow-Up Pictures.

Despite rumors that Artisan is pursuing other Sundance projects, Malin said, “Above and beyond Chuck and Buck we did not make another bid (in Park City). Artisan offered that “anything can happen” and Artisan has a team on site, Arteta’s film appears to be the only Artisan Sundance film.
