DAILY NEWS: LAIFF Kick-off; Propaganda & Pellington, Malin Upped at Artisan

>> Filtering at the LAIFF — Numerous Pix Nab Reps

(indieWIRE/4.13.00) — The independent film community relies on filters
to sift through the hundreds of new films created each year. For many,
the first level of filtering takes place at the festival level as
high-profile industry showcases view hundreds of movies to find their
lineups. At events like the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival,
which opens tonight at the Directors Guild of America, another level of
filtering takes place as indie film reps step in to watch many of the
films that will screen at the festival and decide which movies they feel
have a shot at securing a spot in the marketplace. A number of the
32 new feature films that will screen over the next six days at the LAIFF
arrive at the festival with representation in the hopes of reaching a
wider audience through distribution.

Sloss Special Projects, which recently bid farewell to both Micah Green
and Joy Newhouse, is handling tonight’s LAIFF opener, “Lakeboat,”
directed by Joe Mantegna, written by David Mamet and starring Charles
, Peter Falk, Robert Forster, Denis Leary, and George Wendt.
Sloss is also handling Mia Trachinger‘s world premiere, “Bunny.”
While Steven Beer of Rudolph & Beer is handling festival closer “Big Eden,”
by Thomas Bezucha. The film stars Arye Gross, Louise Fletcher and Eric
. Beer is also repping Jeremy Stein‘s “The Photographer” and
working with Neil Friedman on “I’ll Take You There,” written and
directed by Adrienne Shelly. Friedman is also handling Harry Ralston‘s
The Last Man,” Doug E. Doug‘s “Citizen James,” and James Ryan‘s “The
Young Girl And The Monsoon

The Independent Film Channel‘s Next Wave Films is working with two LAIFF
digital feature documentaries. The company provided finishing funds
and is repping Amir Bar-Lev‘s “Fighter” and David Shapiro and Laurie
Gwen Shapiro
‘s “Keep The River On Your Right: A Modern Cannibal Tale
Next Wave is currently repping the documentary “Sound and Fury,” which
screened at Sundance. Peter Broderick told indieWIRE yesterday that a deal
for that film is imminent. Finally, film rep Jeff Dowd, who sold
Two Family House” at Sundance, is handling Hilary Birmingham‘s “What
Happened To Tully
” — the film will screen later this month at New York’s

>> Propaganda Films Signs Exclusive Deal With Indie Prod. Co.

(indieWIRE/4.13.00) — Propaganda Films president Rick Hess has
announced his company’s first look deal with directing/producing
team Mark Pellington and Tom Gorai. The deal includes first look
rights for television, feature film and new media projects.
Pellington, whose directorial work includes the feature film
Arlington Road” with Tim Robbins and “Going All The Way” with
Ben Affleck, is also known for his music videos for Pearl Jam
and INXS. He also directed “The United States of Poetry” series
for PBS.

Propaganda Films, which has it’s roots in music video, has
been expanding and creating new content for the internet,
motion picture and television industries. According to a
prepared statement the deal “represents the company’s
continued commitment to providing creative talent opportunities

>> Malin Upped to Share Top Spot at Artisan

(indieWIRE/4.13.00) — Artisan Entertainment CEO Mark A. Curcio has named
company President Amir Malin to the post of Co-Chief Executive Officer,
while Ken Schapiro has been named the COO for the company. Malin became
President of Artisan in 1997 after its transition from Live Entertainment.

“[Amir Malin’s] unwavering commitment to Artisan’s vision, his ability
to develop strategic agreements that truly benefit the company and his
foresight to see where the global industry of entertainment is heading
makes him the ideal individual to share the day to day and strategic
leadership of Artisan,” explained Curcio in a prepared statement.
