HBO Signs Deal With "Just, Melvin", Academy to Award Grants to Film Scholars

(indieWIRE/05.03.00) — HBO announced yesterday the they have acquired
the exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to James Ronald Whitney‘s
documentary “Just Melvin,” which premiered at this years Sundance Film
. The film, which chronicle’s the generations of abuse in one
family, has won three first place prizes at film festivals including
Santa Barbara, Newport, and South Beach and was a runner-up at the South
by Southwest Film Festival

The deal was struck by Whitney and HBO’s, Sheila Nevins and Nancy
, who said of the deal, “We’re excited about working with [James
Ronald] Whitney to bring this unique and powerful documentary about the
generational effects of evil to the widest possible audience on HBO.”

Whitney is currently in production on his next film, ‘Love, Sharon
(working title), about the life of Sharon Alt, who conceived a son while
she was married to another woman and her foray into the amateur porn

(indieWIRE/05.03.00) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
has announced a new program which will award $25,000 each to two film
scholars, writers, historians and researchers with a significant record
of achievement, in an effort to “stimulate and support the creation of
new, innovative and significant works of film scholarship about
aesthetic, cultural, educational, historical, theoretical or scientific
aspects of theatrical motion pictures.”

Applicants must propose a new work of film scholarship encompassing some
aspect of theatrical motion picture art, science, commerce, history or
theory. Works solely exploring television, video or other media arts
themes are not eligible. The Academy’s Grants Committee will review
submitted proposals and select each year’s Scholars based on their
proposals. Academy Film Scholars will be required to present their
projects or findings in lecture form at the Academy within one year
