>> Toronto’s 25th Fest to Open With Arcand’s “Stardom”; New Crowe Film Leads Handful of Other Premieres

(indieWIRE/7.6.00) — Denys Arcand‘s “Stardom” will open the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7th, kicking off the event’s 25th
Anniversary. Arcand’s film stars Dan Aykroyd, Frank Langella, Thomas
, Robert Lepage, and Jessica Pare. The Festival, which runs through September 16th, also announced a handlful of Festival gala screenings.

Among the movies set to screen is the world premiere of Cameron Crowe‘s
anticipated, untitled project, starring Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand,
Kate Hudson, Jason Lee, Patrick Fugit, Anna Paquin, Fairuza Balk, Noah Taylor, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The screening of the Dreamworks release follows in the footsteps of last year’s Festival premiere of “American Beauty” — the studio will release the Crowe film shortly after the festival as it did with Oscar-winner, “Beauty.” Also on tap for the Festival are Christopher Guest‘s “Best in Show” (world premiere), Rod Lurie‘s “The Contender” (world premiere), and Marleen Gorris‘ “The Luzhin Defence.”

Guest filmmakers will document their experience at the 25th Toronto Festival
in a program entitled, 25 x 25. Shot on digital video, these shorts will be
screened free to the public as part of the Festival’s anniversary
festivities. Also on tap for the celebration is a look back at the
Festival’s first year, 1976, with a screening of six movies that screened at
the first festival. A total of 13 sections make up the 2000 Festival, from
gala screenings to the acclaimed Discovery section, and including a
documentary section, midnight screenings and work from Africa.

>> Aardman Finds Success Online; 1 Million View “Angry Kid”

(indieWIRE/7.6.00) — Acclaimed British animation house, Aardman, which has
a big-screen hit with “Chicken Run” — the film raked in more than $21
million over the long holiday weekend here in America — is also finding
success on the smallest screen. Aardman’s “Angry Kid,” screening in one
minute installments on Atom Films, has exceeded 1 million viewers according
to an Atom announcement this week.

“We knew that the Internet had vast potential as a major entertainment
medium,” commented Aardman’s Co-Founder and Managing Director Dave Sproxton.
“Even though the net is still evolving, the success of our first character
developed exclusively for the Internet proves what can be achieved.”

Aardman’s “Angry Kid,” a foul mouthed British youth created with studio’s
trademark claymation, debuted online on May 7th. It was created by Darren
Walsh using stop-animation and live action. 25 episodes are currently
available on Aardman is best known for the Academy Award
winning shorts depicting the exploits of Wallace and his precocious pet,
