I am a big fan of indieWIRE, but more and more I feel that there is
something missing in the reporting.
There is continuous talk about deals, deals and deals. That is very good.
The filmmakers should know who are the players and where could be the
potential interest for their films. But there is NEVER talk about the
economics of the deals: what is actually going to the filmmakers: is
there any money going back to them?
I am sure that this is all very confidential and that many people do
not want to disclose figures. On the other hand, some insight in where
returns can be had, could be very stimulating for producers, learn them
things and prepare them better for their own negotiations. I think your
journalists should dig a little deeper. It is important that filmmakers
will learn where and how they can make some money. Filmmaking is an
expensive business. I have been selling docs for more than 20 years and
I know something about returns to filmmakers. The documentary world has
become very competitive and more than ever, filmmakers MUST know where
the potential revenue comes from.

Dear Sandy Mandelberger,
I was very excited to read your article, “In Praise of Small
Jewels…” I had advice from a sales rep not to tell anyone that
my documentary, “Naked States” was at that festival. When I told him I
tied for the audience award that still didn’t matter to him. I happen
to be very proud of that, after 3 1/2 years of making a film it is
wonderful to be recognized.
I was disappointed that there was no mention of “Naked States” which
tied for the audience award in the paragraph where you gave mention
to every award winning film. Was this an oversight?

I enjoy your newsletter daily, but am not interested in reading letters
of your subscribers. Whatever flap occurred because of an article
about the Seattle Film Festival should be handled with a brief statement
from your Editor and then leave it at that. This vituperative debate
is a waste of your other subscriber’s time spent in scanning articles.
