(indieWIRE/ 10.17.00) — The challenges facing next-generation dotcoms
remain evident. Net cinema site laid off half of its staff — 50
employees — Variety‘s Marc Graser reported today. The article indicated
that the site has secured an unspecified amount of additional funding to
keep the site open. In a conversation with Variety, CEO told the
Hollywood trade, “It’s a tough time,” adding, “We remain focused to turn
this into a viable business.”

Variety added that a week ago executives warned employees that a
financier was crucial for the site to stay alive — a deal for cash from a
studio executive reportedly fell though.

The news underscores the difficulty such sites are facing in the current
marketplace. Recent failures in the space include and,
while last week countered with its own commitment to survival,

>>IDA Announces Award Recipients

(indieWIRE/ 10.17.00) — The International Documentary Association (IDA) has
announced the recipients of its Distinguished Achievement Awards. Included
among the honorees this year will be Angus MacQueen‘s “Gulag” (feature
film), Jerzy Sladkowski‘s “Swedish Targowas” (feature film) and Simeon
‘s “The Wildest Show in the South: The Angola Prison Rodeo” (short
film). Other awards, for television programming, were also announced and
will be presented on October 27th in Los Angeles.

“The Distinguished Achievement Awards are designed to inspire as well as
recognize the pursuit of excellence in non-fiction filmmaking,” commented
IDA President David Haugland in a prepared statement. “There were numerous
deserving entries in this year’s competition. We are encouraged to see the
great work being done by so many documentary filmmakers around the world.
