(indieWIRE/01.30.01) — Strand Releasing has secured domestic rights to two films surfing the festival circuit: “Plata Quemada” (“Burnt Money”) directed by Marcelo Pineyro and Samantha Lang‘s “The Monkey’s Mask.” Set in Argentina in 1965, “Burnt Money” is centered around the turbulent relationship between
two men who evolve into lovers as well as merciless bank robbers.
Co-President Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Louisa Dent of UGC
negotiated the deal for the film which premiered at the
2000 Toronto International Film Festival.

Also a 2000 Toronto alumn, “The Monkey’s Mask” is a lesbian noir

disappearance of a young poet, but then meets and falls for the poet’s
professor played by Kelly McGillis. Their partnership leads Jill into
a new world of sexual discovery. Negotiations for “Monkey” were between
Gerrans and John Kochman of Canal +. The film is scheduled for release
in August, 2001 while screenings for “Plata Quemada” are set for July.
