(indieWIRE/05.29.01) — Critic, columnist and programmer Shane Danielsen has
been tapped to serve as the new Artistic Director of the Edinburgh
International Film Festival
. Danielsen will replace Lizze Francke who
announced that she will be leaving the post after this year’s Festival.

Shane Danielsen, who has served as a program advisor for the ICA in London
and a guest programmer at the Melbourne International Film Festival and the
Smithsonian, also programmed the Max Ophuls retrospective at last year’s
Edinburgh Festival.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be handing over to Shane,” Lizzie Francke said
in a prepared statement. “Having had him involved in the Festival this year
and last and knowing him from the international festival circuit, I am
confident that he will bring considerable knowledge and extensive skills to
this wonderful Festival.”

Danielsen said in a prepared statement, “I am extremely proud to be
entrusted with this position at what I regard to be the UK’s premiere Film
Festival, and I look forward to working alongside a great team, to bring our
audience the very best in world cinema.”

The 2001 Edinburgh International Film Festival will run August 12 – 26th.

>> Richardson and Manzari Return to Landmark Theaters

(indieWIRE/05.29.01) — Landmark Theaters, the leading chain of arthouse
theaters in the United States, confirmed Friday that former executives Paul
and Bert Manzari are returning to the company as part of Oaktree Capital Management‘s purchase of Landmark parent, Silver Cinemas, which filed for bankruptcy protection one year ago.

Richardson will serve as President & CEO, while Manzari will become
Executive Vice-President. The two will run Landmark Theaters’ 166 specialty
screens and Silver Cinemas’ 150 discount screens according to the
announcement. The duo were involved with running the company for 17 years,
leaving Landmark when Silver purchased the theater chain.

As part of the announcement, Landmark confirmed that it will resume
construction on the 5-screen Sunshine Cinema in New York City and the
8-screen Bethesda Row Cinema in Washington D.C. Both are set to open this

“While pursuing the over-arching goal of re-establishing Landmark’s
traditional core values, we will aggressively attack deferred maintenance
and customer service shortfalls throughout the circuit,” commented Paul
Richardson in a prepared statement today. While Bert Manzari added in a
prepared statement, “Revitalized grass roots marketing efforts and continued
film booking that re-establishes audience trust with our theatres will be
our first order of business.”

Madstone Films was among the bidders hoping to purchase Silver Cinemas,
after it filed for bankruptcy. For its bid, Oaktree reportedly teamed with
Philip Anschutz, a man at the center of many exhibition chain rescues
