>> AMPAS Presents Student Academy Awards

(indieWIRE/06.12.01) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has
announced the winners of 28th Annual Student Academy Awards. Winners of the
Gold Medals received $5,000 along with their trophies.

David Kartch‘s “Zen and the Art of Landscaping” (Columbia University) won the Gold Medal in the narrative category, while Porter Gale and Laleh
‘s “XXXY” won the Gold Medal in the documentary category. In the
animation Category, the winner of the Gold Medal was Brooke Keesling‘s
Boobie Girl” (California Institute of the Arts) and in the Alternative
Category, the top prize winner was Michael Schaerer‘s “Warmth” (School of Visual Arts). Rodrigo Pla‘s “The Eye on the Nape” (Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica, Mexico City, Mexico)won the Honorary Foreign Film Award.

Silver medalists won $3,000 and Bronze medalists received $2,000 at Sunday’s
awards ceremony. In the narrative category, Carl Pfirman‘s “The Confession” (UCLA) won the Silver Medal and Greg Marcks‘s “Lector” (Florida State University) won the Bronze Medal. In the documentary category, Laura Dunn‘s “Green” (University of Texas, Austin) won the Silver Medal and Marianna Yarovskaya‘s “Undesirables” (USC) won the Bronze Medal. While in the animation category, Victor Robert and Rodney Hom‘s “The Yellow Umbrella” (Art Center College of Design, Pasadena) won the Silver Medal and Sean McBride‘s “That Special Monkey” (University of the Arts, Philadelphia) won the Bronze Medal. No silver or bronze medals were awarded in the alternative category. [Eugene Hernandez]

>> Oscar Winning Doc Director Pursuing Narrative Project

(indieWIRE/06.12.01) — Two-time Academy Award winner Terry Sanders will direct “Tokyo Rose,” an adaptation of Rex Gunn‘s “They Called Her Tokyo Rose,” which was written by Pat Fielder and Richard Bluel.

Sanders recently directed “Return With Honor” and he won his Oscars for
Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision” and “A Time Out of War.” He was nominated for an Academy Award for “Never Give Up: The 20th Century Odyssey of
Howard Zipper

The movie is described in a prepared statement as covering on the arrest,
trial, conviction and pardon of American Iva Toguri who was falsely accused
of treason. The movie is scheduled to begin principal photography later this
