(indieWIRE/10.03.01) — The 23rd Independent Feature Project Market
commenced on Sunday, somewhat more subdued than previous years in the light
of recent events in the city. With approximately 50 completed features (docs
and fiction projects), and the rest either works-in-progress or shorts, the
market has certainly become far more manageable in recent years. “The
works-in-progress section actually allows us to see more stuff,” says Robyn
Yigit Smith
, festival director of Doubletake Documentary Film Festival. Gary Crowdus sees the market as “essential” for his distributor, The Cinema
, both in terms of tracking projects at works-in-progress stage and
making contacts with emerging talent. This year, over 600 filmmakers,
writers, producers are in attendance at the Angelika for screenings, and
industry and panel events at the nearby Puck Building.

Screenings kicked off on Sunday night with “In the Bedroom,” Todd Field‘s
assured and well-written psychological drama, with towering performances
from Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek. The film’s mature perspective on
bereavement is suffused with a quietly percolating rage and some unexpected
twists and turns. The Miramax title is due for release later this month.

At the post-screening party at Metronome, indieWIRE spoke with a number of
