>> Sundance Unveils Programs for House of Docs and Gen-Y Studio

(indieWIRE/12.20.01) — Sundance is continuing to take shape for this year’s
earlier than usual ten-day event in Park City, UT with announcements this
week of its House of Docs and Gen-Y Studio programs. Running January 11th through the 19th, the third annual House of Docs will continue its support
of documentary filmmakers by providing them a chance to meet with resource
advisors, members of the press and industry through discussions, special
presentations and one-on-one meetings.

This year, the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF) will
host, “Pitching to the Pros: The Verbal Art of Selling Your Project.” The
event will take place on Sunday, January 13th with a panel discussion,
described by AIVF, as “giving the successful pitch,” where producers will
have five minutes to verbally sell their projects in addition to meeting
acquisitions and commissioning editors from A&E, HBO, ITVS, MTV, Seventh Art Releasing, and Winstar. (The deadline for submissions to the AIVF is December 28th). Also this year, House of Docs will include a celebration of Women in Art and Politics on January 16th with a series of discussions and

Also making its third annual return, Gen-Y Studio will take place January
12th through 17th at the Elks Lodge on 550 Main Street hosting high school
students from around North America for dialogue and sharing the latest film
technology. Participants will also attend three Sundance screenings that
will follow with a Question & Answer period with the director. Also
scheduled are panels on conflict resolution, “The Road to Exhibition,” and
“Youth Screenings.” Commenting on the program in a prepared statement,
Meredith Lavitt, Senior Manager of the Documentary Film Program said, “The
Gen-Y Studio encourages young filmmakers to embrace media as a form of
self-expression and social change. This year’s activities are designed to
help empower participants to tell their own stories.” The Sundance Film
Festival will take place this year January 10th through January 21st.

>> Artisan Pictures Develops Spy Pic

(indieWIRE/12.20.01) — Artisan Pictures, a division of Artisan Entertainment (the distributor behind such recent releases as “Made” and “Startup.com“), has announced its first development project, under the new leadership of CEO Bob Cooper. The company has hired screenwriter Bill Wheeler to adapt a script, “The Garbo Deception,” based on the real life activities of double agent Juan Pujol, whose deceptions helped British intelligence trick the Germans in World War
II. Charles Weinstock (“Joe Gould’s Secret“) has been tapped to produce the movie.

“This film is designed as more of a character study, than a traditional
cloak and dagger piece,” commented Cooper in a prepared statement. “This
project and Bill Wheeler represent Artisan Pictures’ philosophy that a
unique feature film begins with a strong idea bolstered by a great writer.”

Artisan Pictures is responsible for development, production, and
distribution of the company’s theatrical slate, and recently merged with
Cooper’s Landscape Pictures, an independent company that develops and
