DAILY NEWS: Apollo Cinema to Showcase Oscar Nominated Shorts

(indieWIRE/02.20.02) — Finally, the public will have an opportunity to see
Oscar nominated shorts. Los Angeles-based short film distributor, Apollo
, which specializes in distributing shorts worldwide, will host a gala
premiere of the entire slate of live-action and animated short films
nominated for the 74th Academy Awards Thursday, February 28 at 7:30pm at the
Laemmle Theatres Monica 4. The selection will then run as two 70-minute
programs through the end of April. The same roster of live-action and
animated shorts will also travel to a host of North American cities including
New York, Toronto, Washington, Dallas, Portland, Milwaukee, Atlanta and
Seattle beginning at various dates in March and April. Some dates include the
Two Boots Pioneer Theatre in New York on March 15th, Visions DC in Washington March 7th and March 8th at Toronto’s Bloor Cinema.

“The public does not get the opportunity to see the Oscar nominated shorts,”
commented Apollo Cinema President Carol Crowe in a prepared statement. “We
along with Laemmle Theatres are thrilled to bring all ten Academy Award
nominated short films to the public.”

Oscar nominated Best Live-Action Shorts include: “The Accountant” (Ray
McKinnon), “Copy Shop” (Virgil Widrich), “Gregor’s Greatest Invention
(Johannes Kiefer), “A Man Thing” (Meska Sprawa and Bogumil Godfrejow),
and “Speed for the Thespians” (Kalman Apple and Shameela Bakhsh). The
Best animated Short Film nominees are “Fifty Percent Grey” (Ruairi
Robinson and Seamus Byrne), “For the Birds” (Ralph Eggleston), “Give Up
Yer Aul Sins
” (Cathal Gaffney and Darragh O’ Connell), “Strange Invaders
(Cordell Barker), “Stubble Trouble” (Joseph E. Meredith). [Brian Brooks]
