>> Rotterdam Closes with Tiger Prizes

(indieWIRE: 02.04.02) — The 31st Rotterdam Film Festival Festival closed
this weekend in The Netherlands as the jury honored three directors with
Tiger Awards. Selected for the awards were local Eugenie Jansen for
Tussenland” (Sleeping Rough) from The Netherlands, Bohdan Slama from
The Czech Republic for “Divoke Slama” (Wild Bees) and Sinisa Dragin from
Romania for “In Fiecare Zi Dumnezeu Ne Saruta Pe Gura” (Everyday God
Kisses Us on the Mouth). Each Tiger carries a 10,000 euro prize and
distribution options.

Danis Tanovic‘s “No Man’s Land” won the audience award at the 2002
Festival, which boasted 350,000 admissions. The Festival FIPRESCI film critics award
went to “Mein Bruder Der Vampir” (Getting My Brother Laid) by German Gven
, while a special mention was given to Lisandro Alonso from
Argentina for “La Libertad“). This year’s youth jury prize went to
Catherine Breillat‘s “Fat Girl.”

Finally, the Prince Claus Fund Film Grant, a 15,000 euro prize meant to
support a Cinemart project from Africa, Asia, Latin America or the
Caribbean, went to Nan T. Achnas for Trix Images Productions for “The

>> Millard Lands at IDP in NYC

(indieWIRE: 02.04.02) — RJ Millard is joining IDP as the company’s new
Vice President of Publicity and Marketing, based in New York. He is leaving his
posts as the Press Officer for The Sundance Film Festival and Marketing &
Publicity Director for the Los Angeles Film Festival.

“We are truly delighted to have someone of RJ’s unique talents and
sensibilities joining the IDP team,” commented IDP President Michael
in a prepared statement. “His passion and knowledge of
independent film and his Sundance experience make him the ideal person to lead our marketing and publicity efforts.”

IDP Distribution is a joint venture that was established to market and
distribute films for Fireworks Pictures, Samuel Goldwyn Films and
Stratosphere Entertainment. Among its upcoming releases are the German
Academy Award entry, “Das Experiment,” George Hickenlooper‘s “The Man From Elysian Fields,” Henry Bean‘s Sundance award-winner “The Believer,” Sandra Goldbacher‘s BAFTA nominee “Me Without You,” Christine Jeffs‘ festival-favorite “Rain,” and the acclaimed Korean film, “Shiri.” [Eugene Hernandez]

>> The Film Society of Lincoln Center Screens “Afghanistan Then and Now”

(indieWIRE: 02.04.02) — Legendary documentary “Massoud l’Afghan” and “Jung
(War): In the Land of the Mujaheddi
” are among the features that will
screen in the week long series, “Afghanistan Then And Now” at The Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Highlights of the series which runs February 8 – 13 at the Walter Reade
include a discussion with “Jung” directors Fabrizzio Lazaretti
and Alberto Vendemmiatti as well as a screening of Christophe de
‘s dramatic doc “A Valley Against an Empire.” The film spotlights
charismatic Mujaheddin personality, Massoud, who helped remove Soviet
occupiers in the 1980s and later became the leader of the Northern
Alliance which fought against the Taliban. He was killed by an al
Quaeda suicide bomber shortly before the events of September 11. [Brian Brooks]
