>> “Late Marriage” Solid in Second Weekend
(indieWIRE: 05.29.02) — Magnolia Pictures continued its success with the
release of Dover Kosashvili‘s “Late Marriage” over the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend. The company, led by Eamonn Bowles in New York, City expanded “Late Marriage” to 6 screens in Los Angeles and New York, earning $69,694, or
a per screen of $11,616. It was tops at both the Lincoln Plaza and the Cinema
Village in NYC. The movie has now grossed a total of $117,860.
Sony Pictures Classics debuted Jill Sprecher‘s “13 Conversations About One Thing” over the weekend, on 9 screens. The film earned $89,499 over the four

>> NIFF’s 33rd Festival Kicks Off with “Colored Eggs”
(indieWIRE: 05.29.02) — Calling this year’s program “the most ambitious
lineup in the organization’s 33-year history,” the Nashville Independent
Film Festival announced that its program will feature 200 films,
documentaries, shorts, plus animated, experimental, and retrospective
works from around the world. Martin Guigui‘s “Colored Eggs,” starring
Lauren Holly, Faye Dunaway, Ian Somerhalder, and Tom Skerritt, will have its world premiere on the June 5th opening night, kicking off a
five-day event of sidebars, panels and workshops taking place in the
famed country music capital.
NIFF’s Cine Latino makes a return this year with screenings of recent films
created by and spotlighting hispanics, while Kids Film Fest will feature
more than a dozen films for children, including animated and international
work. Workshops and panels will be hosted by industry professionals like
Kodak‘s Janet Tiller, ASCAP‘s Pamela Allen as well as executive producers Peter Casey (“Frasier“) and Marilyn Wilson (“Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher“). The guest list will climax with indie maverick John Waters appearing closing night for “Shock Value: An Evening with John Waters.” Formed in 1969, NIFF is one of the country’s oldest film festivals.

>> Miramax Picks Up “Paper Clips”
(indieWIRE: 05.29.02) — Miramax Films has acquired worldwide theatrical and
home video rights to “Paper Clips,” a new documentary about a rural Tennessee
middle school class and its quest to honor the six million Jews killed in the
Holocaust by collecting a paper clip for each life lost in the tragedy.
Currently in post-production, “Paper Clips” is being produced by Joe Fab,
Ari Daniel Pinchot (associate producer for “The Life and Times of Hank
Greenberg“), and Robert M. Johnson. The Johnson Group‘s Elliot Berlin and Joe Fab are directing the project, which Fab also is writing. Executive
producers are Ergo Entertainment‘s Donny Epstein, Yeeshai Gross, and Eli Landau.
“In a world short on empathy, cross-cultural understanding and tolerance,
this remarkable film gives us a ray of hope and inspiration for our
collective future,” said Miramax LA president Mark Gill in a prepared
statement. “It’s an honor to be a part of it.” Gill and Matthew Hiltzik, VP
