>> Wellspring Sails on “Ark,” Sings “Love Song”

(indieWIRE: 09.19.02) — Wellspring Media has acquired U.S. theatrical and
home video rights to Alexander Sokurov‘s “Russian Ark” and Bille
‘s “This is Not a Love Song.” Both films were acquired from
Paris-based sales company Celluloid Dreams.

“Russian Ark,” which was shot on digital video, is the first full-length,
single-take, continuous uncut Steadicam feature. Filmed in the Hermitage in
St. Petersburg, Russia, the film tells the story of a 19th-century French
diplomat and a contemporary Russian filmmaker who are mysteriously
transported to the 1700s, where they find themselves in the fabled Winter
Palace. The film will be screened at this year’s New York Film Festival and
is set for release later this fall. “Ark” recently won the $20,000
Independent Film Channel Visions Award at the Toronto Film Festival.

“This is Not a Love Song,” also shot on DV, follows the story of two petty
criminals who mistakenly kill the young daughter of a farmer and are
relentlessly pursued across the Northern countryside by both the police and
a posse of local farmers intent on revenge. “This is Not a Love Song” is
slated for a 2003 release. [Matthew Ross]
