by Eugene Hernandez
The 8th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival will open on April 3 with the Robert Evans bio documentary “The Kid Stays in The Picture.” Evans, producer of “Chinatown,” “Marathon Man,” will also receive the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The film tells the producer’s story as a third person autobiography, directed by Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgan, but written by and starring Evans.
Oscar nominated actor Adrien Brody will answer questions after a special screening of Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist.” Brody will be awarded the festival’s outstanding performance of the year for his portrayal of Holocaust survivor Wladyslaw Szpilman.
PBIFF will also screen the 1961 classic “Flower Drum Song” starring James Shigeta as an Asian-American nightclub owner who is arranged to be married to a woman from Hong Kong, but has other plans including a romance with a singer. The film was the first major Hollywood studio film about Asian-Americans. Shigeta will discuss the film following the screening.
The festival will also hold its first film competition. Competitive feature entries include “The Annihilation of Fish,” starring James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave as an odd couple with imaginary lives that find love and fulfillment in each other’s company and “Small Voices,” a Philippine film about an elementary school teacher trying to make changes in a poor village. In addition to the feature competition, awards will be given to the best documentary and best short.
The festival will close on April 10 with Alan Rudolph’s “The Secret Lives of Dentists.” The film stars Campbell Scott as a dentist who shares a practice and a picket fence existence with his dissimilar wife. Rudolph will attend the screening.
Other non-competitive screenings include Sundance selection “Confidence,” Puerto Rican Oscar submission “12 Horas,” and an outdoor screening of IFC hit, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”
