Alex Steyermark’s “Prey for Rock and Roll” has been acquired by MAC Releasing in association with Samy Boy Films for North American distribution, MAC partner Craig Baumgarten announced yesterday. The feature, which played as a special screening at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, stars Gina Gershon, Drea De Matteo (“The Sopranos”), Lori Petty (“Tank Girl”), and Shelly Cole (“The Princess and the Barrio Boy”) as an all-girl punk band in Los Angeles. “Prey for Rock and Roll” is based on rocker Cheri Lovedog’s autobiographical rock musical portraying the journey of a band striving for success while dealing with difficult personal issues that threatens their bond.

“We are extremely impressed with MAC’s marketing plan for the movie. It’s clear that they understand how to position the film to multiple audiences, including lovers of edgy independent film and rock music fans, and that Gina is not only a tremendous actress, but also a musical phenomenon in the making,” said Steyermark. The director previously served as the music supervisor for “Malcolm X,” “The Ice Storm,” “For Love or Money,” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Steyermark directed the short films “Requiem,” and “Where Little Demons Dwell.”

The film is slated for a late summer or early autumn 2003 release. Gershon, who sings her own songs live in the film, will go on a tour of rock clubs to perform original music from the film. MAC was founded in May 2002 by Mike Marcus, Andy Gruenberg, and Baumgarten, while Samy Boy Films is a one-year old motion picture company established by Sam Nazarian.
