Director Alexandre Rockwell and actor Steve Buscemi will present their latest collaboration “13 Moons” at the April 5 opening night of the ninth-annual Avignon/New York Film Festival. “13 Moons” takes place over the course of a Los Angeles evening during which a variety of misfits, including Buscemi’s Bananas the Clown, help to save the life of a bail bondman’s son. It marks Buscemi and Rockwell’s fourth film together.

The festival will show 18 films in competition from April 5-13 in various Manhattan locations. In keeping with tradition, half the films are American, the other half are French. American entries include Scott Saunders’ “The Technical Writer,” Peter Callahan’s “Last Ball,” Zev Berman’s “Briar Patch,” and “Melvin Comes to Dinner” directed by Bob Odenkirk of TV’s “Mr. Show.”

The French contingent will include Virginie Wagon’s “Sous Mes Yeux,” Bernard Rapp’s “Pas Si Grave,” and Isabelle Doval’s “Rires Et Chatiments.” Wagon, Rapp, and Doval will each make the journey across the Atlantic. In other programming highlights, 26 short films and three documentaries will screen, including “Marilyn Malgre Elle,” which traces the year Marilyn Monroe spent in New York taking acting lessons from Lee Strasberg and starting a production company with photographer Milton Greene.

The festival’s closing film is “Out of the Ashes” directed by Joseph Sargent and starring Christine Lahti. The Showtime original film is based on Holocaust survivor Dr. Gisella Pell’s autobiography. Sargent and Lahti will attend the screening.
