With a new calendar slot and a new managing director the 34th annual Nashville Film Festival expects record-breaking attendance this year. George Koch will oversee the week long festival beginning today with a special screening of Oscar-nominated documentary “Spellbound”. Brian Gordon is the event’s Artistic Director. The doc, which also played at Toronto’s Sprockets, follows eight teenagers in their quest to win the National Spelling Bee.

NFF will present the world premieres of local director David Abbotts’s “Charlie’s War” and the documentary “King of Bluegrass: The Life and Times of Jimmy Martin.” In “Charlie’s War” Olympia Dukakis stars as a woman trying to understand her recurrent nightmares by revisiting her childhood. Stars Diane Ladd and Oprah’s dad Vernon Winfrey will attend the premiere, while bluegrass legend Martin will be present for the opening of his film.

Over the course of the week more than 200 films will screen at the Regal Cinemas 16 on four screens. Highlights will include Sundance selection “A Decade Under The Influence,” and Stockholm winner “Lilya 4-Ever.” The festival will host a mid-week benefit concert at the Rocketown Club following the screening of locally made documentary “The Dance” with country music stars Trace Adkins, Sara Evans, and Jack Ingram.

The festival moved up from its normal early June slot in order to take advantage of potential audiences from local colleges and avoid competing with Nashville’s annual convention of country music fans at Fan Fair.
